Process of refund by IRCTC in case of waiting list of Indian Railway Ticket booking

This article is based on the response made by the IRCTC customer care in reply of my email on Oct 15, 2015. We can contact IRCTC care using care@irctc.co.in or 011-39340000 and can visit at www.irctc.co.in.

I asked:

1. When will (on which date) Indian Railway refund me?
2. How much will deduct?
3. Will this cancellation happen automatically (should I do something to cancel)?

They have replied:

Kindly note that CKWL means tatkal wait list ticket and confirmation your ticket depends upon the cancellation and on existing railway rules. The final status of your ticket will be available after preparation of chart.

And as per the rule the passenger cannot travel with the waitlisted e-ticket if does not get confirmed after chart preparation.

Also note that in a wait list ticket if all the passengers remains wait list even after chart preparation, then the customer need not to apply to IRCTC for cancellation and refund. Cancellation will be executed by the system automatically after chart preparation and refund will be credited with in 6 to 7 working days electronically in the respective account.

Further note that as per Indian Railway rules in case of waitlisted ticket including tatkal ticket cancellation charges Rs. 30/- per passenger shall be deducted and rest of the amount including tatkal charges is refunded to the same account from which the amount is paid.
